Poudre Wilderness Volunteers celebrate 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, the Poudre Wilderness Volunteers (PWV) have planned free admission events around Fort Collins.

PWV is hosting two showings of “Forever Wild,” a documentary narrated by Robert Redford and featuring prose by Terry Tempest Williams. This one-hour long film celebrates America’s wilderness and the heroes who have fought to keep these natural masterpieces as they are.

The first event will be July 31, at the Fort Collins Downtown Library, 201 Peterson St., starting at 7 p.m. The second date will be August 14, at the Discovery Museum, 408 Mason Ct., at 7:30 p.m.

The Poudre Wilderness Volunteers have been gearing up since last winter planning activities for both members of their organization and the public. They have a Get into Wilderness Initiative, where they have organized several hikes in the Rawah Wilderness Area, one of the first designated by President Lyndon B. Johnson’s important act. They have also helped make the commemorative poster featuring photographer John Fielder’s work on Colorado’s beautiful landscapes and will host other events, including art shows and nature walks later in the year.
