U.S. Forest Service firefighters plan to take advantage of recent snow accumulation to burn slash piles starting Feb. 25 along Johnny Park Road, located south and west of the Big Elk Meadows Subdivision. Tomorrow burning could occur in at Pingree Hill, located between Rustic and the Shambhala Mountain Center, and Thompson River, located west of Pinewood Reservoir. If conditions are favorable, burning could continue at these or other locations throughout the week.
Conditions are evaluated each day of the burn to determine if ignition will take place. Wind, fuel moisture, staffing and snow cover all play a factor in where and whether ignition occurs.
To date, the Canyon Lakes Ranger District has burned over 1,800 piles this winter.
