Protect and restore property with help from Summit Forestry

Summit Forestry celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Owner Tony Mahon, who started by helping people develop defensible space around their homes, proudly said his company now provides full-service forest/land management for private landowners. Services include planting trees and shrubs, removal and hauling of burned trees and everything in between.

All Summit services relate to wildfire protection. “We’re the best around,” said Tony, in protecting rural homes. The recent major wildfires in Colorado have offered many lessons in why some homes burn and others don’t, and Summit Forestry has changed its practices accordingly.

“Our understanding has evolved about what really works,” Tony said. Now, in addition to looking at the property around a home, Tony and his crew also study the home itself for possible ignition points, and they offer appropriate remedies.

Some insurance companies now do annual inspections of rural, forested properties, Tony pointed out, and many insurance policies have been cancelled as a result. Summit works with people to avoid that outcome.

The Summit crew takes care of pine beetle and flood clean-up as well as restoration of the land following these catastrophes. Chipping, reseeding and erosion control are important aspects of their work.

Another interesting facet of the business is dimensional milling of burned trees. After losing homes to fire, property owners find it satisfying to have custom furniture or new homes built from these trees.
