Wellington Public Library update for Dec. 2012

Can anyone tell me where autumn went? Seriously, here it is December and I still have a jack-o-lantern on my porch. So, when someone asked about my plans for the holidays, I thought “hibernation” would be an appropriate answer. Bears are one of the smarter animals in my book.

But I think they were asking about possibly a trip or a big family get-together. So to look at this time of year in a more positive way, I stopped thinking about all the things I have to get done and started thinking about all the wonderful things I get to do, such as order holiday books, decorate the library (it’s going to be very festive), and put together displays featuring the best of the season, like knitting, winter sports, indoor family activities, cooking, baking and great wintertime reads. And you know what? My heart grew three sizes that day! (That line was stolen from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Thank you, Dr. Seuss.)

Now I’m excited that I get to try new recipes, find perfect gifts for people I care about, triple my light bill with all those indoor and outdoor decorations, and share the season with our wonderful library patrons.

Because supplies at the local food bank are low — and the needs of our neighbors great — this year, our Food for Fines Program will continue through Dec. 21. For each canned good you bring in we will take a dollar off your overdue fines. Cans of tuna or bags of pasta or other high-price, high-protein items will be worth $2 off your fines. (If you don’t have any overdue books, you can still drop off nonperishable food items at the library through Dec. 21.)

This month’s storytimes will take place Dec. 11 and 18 at 11 a.m. For the Dec. 11 storytime we’ll be reading books and doing a Christmas stocking craft, while the Dec. 18 storytime will be about Christmas trees.

On Dec. 19, with the help of the Wellington Library Friends, we will have all the goodies available for kids to build and decorate a gingerbread house. We’d like to have an estimate of how many might be showing up for this event so please call and let us know your intentions. Our phone number is 970-568-3040.

The WPL Book club is meeting Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. To finish the year off members are reading their choice of any book about Christmas, so feel free to drop in and participate.

Save the date for the library’s third annual Open House on Jan. 11. We’ll be serving gourmet cocoa and mulled cider along with cookies.

The library will be closed Dec. 22 thru 25 and Dec. 31 thru Jan. 1, 2013. We wish the happiest of holidays to everyone.
