Happy New Year!
I assume if you are reading this we can deduce that the Mayans were wrong. Being it’s a new year, we probably all have ideas on ways we want to improve ourselves or our world.
Do you want to broaden your mind or narrow your waist? We have books on improving everything from your car, to your house, to your income, to your cooking, to your self. Our non-fiction section is full of different and interesting books.
If your new year’s goal is to broaden your mind; books both fictional and non-fictional are a great for expanding your knowledge base. Our points of view seem mainly based on our own experiences, but the written word is a powerful force. Much more powerful than we give it credit. The written word is thought out and direct. Great speeches have been given by Winston Churchill, Adolph Hitler, Nelson Mendella, John F. Kennedy, to name but a few.
These speeches, although eloquently given, started as the written word and had great impact. A non-fiction book such as “Unbroken,” by Laura Hillenbrand, lets us experience the World War II Pacific theatre thru the eyes of Lt. Louis Zamperini. “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” by Diane Ackerman, gives us insight into a civilian’s struggle in Nazi Germany. The fictional work “Boy in the Striped Pyjamas,” by John Boyne, shows us war thru a child’s eyes.
Other fictional writers such as Jodi Picoult, Jane Hamilton, Alice Hoffman and many others have an ability to open our eyes to different points of views. The book “The Help,” by Kathryn Stockett, showed many of us a part of society we may have not been aware existed. These authors write in the fiction genre, so their stories are not true but the underlying issues are true. To have the ability to look at something from another person’s perspective is to broaden your own field of knowledge. Books can open your eyes to different perspectives on various subjects and give you a different insight into events you may have not personally experienced.
The library will have preschool storytimes on Jan. 8 and 22 at 11 a.m. The Wellington Library Friends will meet Jan. 7 at 4:15 p.m. The library open house will be all day on Jan. 9. Please drop in for cookies, hot chocolate and cider.
Your little ones winter fidgets can be cured by bringing them to Tumbling Tots by Alani Martial Arts at 11 a.m. on Jan. 15. The library will be closed on Jan. 21 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. If you have questions about any of these events please call us at 970-568-3040.
