Wellington Town Board plans to cancel election

Unless a write-in candidate steps forward by the end of Wednesday, the Wellington Town Board is cancelling its April 3 election.

By Tuesday, March 13, only three people had declared their intent to run for the three open seats on the Town Board: Jack Brinkhoff, Reggie Kemp and Larry Noel. State law allows an election to be cancelled if there are no more declared candidates than open seats 19 days before the election and no other questions appear on the ballot.

Brinkhoff currently serves on the board and Kemp is a former trustee; Noel is a former mayor of Wellington.

Canceling the election and declaring the three candidates elected for four-year terms is on the agenda for Tuesday night’s board meeting that begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Leeper Center.

If someone files to run as a write-in candidate before 5 p.m. on March 14, the town clerk will proceed with the election, according to the resolution before the board.
