Cache La Poudre schools, LaPorte businesses and LaPorte firefighters cooperate on food drive

For the 11th consecutive year, the Cache La Poudre Elementary School and Cache La Poudre Middle School, along with businesses in LaPorte and LaPorte’s firefighters, will collaborate for a holiday food drive. The drive will take place during the first two weeks in December.

The food drive was implemented by Bud Riggs — a longtime volunteer at CLPE and CLPMS — and Nick Lanteri, owner of Vern’s Restaurant. The two men like to think of this drive as “LaPorte helping LaPorte” because many community members contribute to each holiday basket.

Contributions from local businesses support this annual drive and include money to purchase pie, turkey, potatoes and stuffing for each basket. Some contributions are in the form of food such as milk and eggs.

Last year, the schools donated 3,219 cans and boxes of food which were used to round out the holiday baskets. Firefighters then stored and distributed the baskets to families in need.

The kids have enjoyed contributing to the cause too. One of last year’s fifth graders said, “I feel really good that I’m helping families that don’t have a lot of money right now.”
