Dates announced for Larimer County Sheriff's Office Citizens' Academy

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office has announced the 2014 dates for the annual Citizens’ Academy. The fall session will run from Sept. 16 through Dec. 9. Classes are held weekly on Tuesday evenings and there is a limit of 35 participants for the session and a $25 fee to cover the cost of an academy T-shirt and lunch during the field day. Participants are chosen on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration begins July 1.

The Citizens’ Academy is designed to give civilians an inside look at operations of Larimer County Sheriff’s Office. Each session has behind-the-scenes information on how various units operate and are taught by the deputies or captains responsible for that division. Sessions commonly covered are:
• K-9 unit
• Volunteer opportunities
• Patrol operations and investigations
• Crime lab
• Emergency management and emergency services
• SWAT, criminal impact unit and bomb squad.

One of the highlights of the academy is a field practical day, scheduled this year for Oct. 11, when academy students participate in live scenarios responding to calls. This includes shooting with simulated ammunition, making a simulated traffic stop, and processing a crime scene for evidence. A ride-along with a deputy is also offered, as is a tour of the Larimer County Jail.

To apply, residents must meet the following requirements:
1. At least 18 years of age
2. No felony convictions
3. Must be a resident or business owner in Larimer County
4. No misdemeanor arrests within one year of the start of the academy
5. Applicants are expected to make a personal commitment to attend all classes.

Questions may be directed to Barb Bennett at [email protected] or 970-682-0597. The application link will not go live until July 1.
