Historic Deadman Lookout Tower, located approximately 15 miles west of Red Feather Lakes, opened for the season on July 15. This site is staffed entirely by volunteers and provides an amazing panoramic view of the Roosevelt National Forest and beyond.
The Lookout Tower will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Sept. 18. The site also has restroom facilities and picnic tables, and is a great place to visit to enjoy your National Forest.
The tower was last officially staffed in the 1970s and is located at an elevation of 10,700 feet. Climbing into the top of the 1961 lookout is like stepping back in time. Original furniture and equipment are still usable and in place. Volunteers share fire lookout history with visitors, along with providing information on area recreation such as camping, fishing and scenic driving. Volunteers also work as amateur fire spotters for the U.S. Forest Service.
Visitors are urged to use extra caution this year when traveling along Tower Road (NFR 170). There is a timber sale in this area and, although the road to the tower remains open, operations will be taking place adjacent to the road. There are 74 acres of treatment along 3 miles of this road. Be prepared for delays of up to 30 minutes and keep an eye out for logging trucks and other equipment.
