Humane Society to evacuate animals from fire

The Larimer Humane Society has now taken in more than 250 animals evacuated from the High Park Fire, more than 10 times the number it’s received in any other evacuation, according to spokeswoman Stephanie Ashley. As the fire continues to burn, the incident management team and the humane society will be teaming up to retrieve and care for the overwhelming number of animals in need safely and efficiently.

Anyone who tries to retrieve their animals from evacuated areas will be turned away at roadblocks for their own safety and the safety of the emergency response teams.

If you need to retrieve animals from your property or need one-time assistance to provide animals water at your residence, call Larimer Humane Society at 970-226-3647 ext. 7 to speak with a dispatch officer and provide contact information and descriptions of animals.

If you are able to evacuate with your animals, call the same dispatch number to find the best location to provide temporary care. The humane society will provide the most up-to-date information on the animal facilities with space and resources available for different types of animals and will direct owners to the appropriate location based on their needs.

At this time, large animals, livestock, horses and barnyard fowl are being cared for at The Ranch in Loveland, near the human evacuation center. Larimer Humane Society is taking in pets and small mammals as space allows. Several other animal facilities are available to house pets when the shelter is full.

Anyone who would like to help the humane society care for the animals is urged to make a financial contribution at larimerhumane.org.
