Larimer County sales tax increases Jan. 1

Larimer County sales tax will increase to 0.65 percent (from .60 percent) effective January 1, 2015. The change reflects two sales and use taxes voters approved last November for the Jail Expansion and Humane Society. Open Space Extension that voters approved in November doesn’t take effect until 2019.

The new sales and use tax rates are dedicated to the following programs:

· Open Space Extension – .25 percent
· Jail Expansion Extension – .15 percent (down from a previous .20 percent)
· Fairgrounds (The Ranch) – .15 percent
· Humane Society – .10 percent (new sales tax)

The Larimer County sales tax is collected along with the State sales tax of 2.9 percent and any applicable City/Town sales tax. The Department of Revenue will update the Larimer County sales tax return on Revenue Online for businesses that are registered to remit online. For vendors still using the coupons sent by the Colorado Department of Revenue, the 2015 coupons will reflect the new sales tax rate.

All vendors doing business in Larimer County were notified by Larimer County Finance about the change via post card last week, as they need to update their cash registers and financial systems. Please contact Larimer County Sales Tax Departmentat 970-498-5930 with any questions or visit the sales tax page on the County’s web site, the Virtual Courthouse at: http://larimer.org/finance/salestax.htm.
