“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” This quote from the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu describes the renewal that has taken place at the Wellington Public Library.
The first step began last fall with the culling of our collection, starting with fiction; which allowed us to move sections around and make the library more aesthetically appealing. We created a new children’s area near the large window and have enjoyed watching everyone’s reaction to having the sun shine in.

The new children’s area is dedicated to our late Director Gene Ann Trant. Under her guidance the library became the success it is today. The new computer area is more open and inviting, with a table and chairs for patrons to sit and use their own laptops. We also have more computers available to the public and a separate area for testing. Topping it all off we did some painting to brighten it up.
To celebrate our new look, the Wellington Library Friends are throwing a Spring Tea on May 7 at 3 p.m. Please stop in and enjoy a spot of tea. A jaunty hat is not required but would be found amusing. There are still a few things left to do, but thanks to all the hard work from our staff and our volunteers we will be done before our summer reading program kicks off.
“Fizz, Boom, Read” is this year’s summer reading program theme. It promises to be as exciting as it sounds! Children and teens can sign up at the library or online starting on the first day of the program which is June 2. For the month of May, the WPL Bookclub will be reading “The Light Between Oceans,” by M.L. Stedman. A World War I Veteran becomes a lighthouse keeper in the remote Indian Ocean off the coast of Western Australia. He finds himself cast into a string of lies and has to make some moral decisions. It’s a fascinating setting and story.
Storytimes for the month of May are the 13th and the 27th at 11 a.m. Please bring your preschoolers and enjoy some spring books and crafts with us.
The Wellington Library Friends would like to invite anyone interested in joining to attend their next meeting on Monday, May 5 at 4:15 p.m. The meeting is held in the conference room at the library.
The library will be closed Saturday, May 24 and Monday, May 26 in observance of Memorial Day Weekend. Please have a safe holiday.
