Slash pile burning continues near Red Feather, Estes Park

U.S. Forest Service firefighters plan to burn slash piles on the Canyon Lakes Ranger District Jan. 16 and continue next week as conditions allow. No burning is expected to take place over the holiday weekend. On Jan. 16, firefighters anticipate burning machine piles at the Trout Creek location. Burning could take place any of the following locations next week, depending on conditions:

· Thompson River 2, Pole Hill Road and Highway 36 area near Estes Park
· Trout Creek, north and south of Forest Road 315
· Red Feather 2, north of Red Feather Lakes, Lost Lake area
· Estes Valley 5, Johnny Park Road and Big Elk Meadows Subdivision area

Conditions are evaluated each day of the burn to determine if ignition will take place. Wind, fuel moisture, staffing and snow cover all play a factor in where and whether ignition occurs. In the last week, firefighters burned over 600 piles on the district in an effort to reduce hazardous fuels bringing this winter’s total to over 3,600 piles.
