Christmas tree cutting on the Canyon Lakes Ranger District has been a holiday tradition for nearly 40 years in the Red Feather Lakes area. Help this tradition continue and earn a free Christmas tree by volunteering this holiday season.
The Canyon Lakes Ranger District is currently looking for volunteers to work for one or more days at the cutting site during the two weekends the area is open (Dec. 6-7 and Dec. 13-14). The site is located south of Red Feather Lakes, west of the Manhattan Road.
Volunteers are needed to work at the entrance station. They will work with Forest Service personnel, leaving Fort Collins at 7 a.m. Entrance station workers greet tree cutters, hand out maps of the tree-cutting area, answer questions about prices and road conditions, and check that vehicles have chains or four-wheel drive.
Volunteers are also needed to be Smokey Bear and his helpers. Working with Forest Service employees, you will leave Fort Collins at 8 a.m. Smokey greets the public, poses for pictures, acts as a bear ambassador to children, and generally has a good time (but doesn’t speak!) Smokey’s helpers escort Smokey, take photos, and hand out Smokey goodies from inside Smokey’s cabin.
