Wellington teens win AQHA reserve world championship in team penning, ranch sorting

Logan and Kason Wolfe of Wellington and Jordan Pollema of Loveland captured the reserve world championship title in team penning at the 2012 Built Ford Tough American Quarter Horse Youth Association World Championship Show in Oklahoma City on Aug. 11.

Pollema was also the Intermediate first-place winner in the class, riding Peps Play Olena, an 11-year-old bay mare. Logan Wolfe competed on Mucho Mouth, a 7-year-old sorrel gelding, while Kason Wolfe was aboard Areywego, a 6-year-old bay gelding. Thirty-eight teams competed in team penning, with the championship going to an all-female team with members from Oklahoma and Texas.

The Wolfe brothers also took reserve champion honors in the ranch sorting competition, with Logan on the bay mare Light N Liz and Kason riding bay gelding Sumers Choice. Kason Wolfe was the Intermediate second-place winner in the class. Thirty teams qualified in ranch sorting, and the championship was captured by a team of two women from Texas and Mississippi.

The Ford Youth World is the pinnacle event for American Quarter Horse exhibitors under the age of 18, who must qualify to compete in their events by earning points in regional competitions. The 34 classes represented at the weeklong event included halter, Western and English disciplines. More than 2,400 entries in this year’s event included competitors from 49 states as well as from Canada, England, Sweden and Venezuela.

The Rocky Mountain Team Penning Association finals will be held at The Ranch, the Larimer County fairgrounds complex in Loveland, Sept. 15 and 16. For more information, go to the RMTPA website, rmtpa.com.
