You Me & Apollo seems to have a tendency to subtly explode. It’s a phenomenon difficult to put directly into words. Take the opening track of the band’s 2013 release, aptly titled The EP, for example. “Before I Die” introduces itself as a slow and seductive Otis Redding-like love ballad. As the song evolves, the tone and tempo evolve with it, becoming progressively louder and faster, Brent Cowles’ vocals becoming more desperate and enveloped with outright emotion. It is an impressive development, one that many bands do not have the capability to produce. “We Got a Roof” follows a somewhat similar pattern, a song packed with the indie/folk-turns-rock sound that You Me & Apollo exemplifies so incontestably. The EP is a consistently solid album, completely integrated with such a unique sound that is hard to pin down. The live show of the Fort Collins-based band is not one to miss either, with an energy so principally discreet that slowly unfolds into an enveloping, hard-hitting performance. As the band returns this month from a tour with Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers, it can be confidently said that You Me & Apollo is not one to be ignored.
