Larimer commissioners expected to finalize public safety ballot issue on Aug. 30

The Board of Larimer County Commissioners heard draft ballot language on Aug. 23 for placing a public safety ballot question on the November 1, 2011 ballot. The ballot issue would ask for an extension of the current sales tax to operate the county jail and support alternative sentencing programs.

Two current sales taxes, equaling .4 percent, are set to expire in 2012 and 2014. In the ballot language, those taxes would be repealed and replaced by one 15-year sales tax totaling .375 percent, slightly less than the current sales taxes.

A citizens’ committee, ‘Citizens for Keeping Public Safety First,’ supported the issue today at public comment preceding the Attorney’s ballot language recommendation. That committee urged the Commissioners to support the ballot issue.

The board plans to make a final decision on placing the issue on the ballot on Tuesday, Aug. 30 beginning at 9 a.m. in the Commissioners Conference Room, 200 West Oak St., Fort Collins.
