GREELEY, Colo. — Downtown Greeley’s major infrastructure overhaul is approaching a significant milestone, with nearly half of the planned sewer pipeline installed. However, the progress comes with additional traffic disruptions as construction crews prepare for another round of street closures beginning Monday, October 19.
According to the City of Greeley, crews have installed about 1,700 feet of new sewer pipe, roughly five football fields. Workers have also completed nearly 1,900 feet of water pipeline installation, representing 22% of the project’s planned water improvements.
The construction is part of the city’s Downtown Infrastructure Improvements Project, a multiyear effort to modernize aging underground utilities while upgrading streets, sidewalks, and public spaces.
Downtown Street Closures Beginning October 19
Drivers, business owners, and visitors should anticipate several changes to downtown traffic patterns during the coming week.
- 8th Avenue and 11th Street: A partial intersection closure will allow northbound drivers on 8th Avenue to turn right onto 11th Street, but they may not travel straight through the intersection.
- 9th Avenue between 11th and 12th Streets: The block will remain closed, including the intersection at 9th Avenue and 12th Street.
- Westbound 10th Street between 8th and 11th Avenues: The westbound route will be closed, including the intersections at 8th Avenue and 10th Street and 10th Avenue and 10th Street.
- 9th Avenue and 10th Street: The intersection has temporarily reopened to maintain access to downtown businesses but will close again as construction advances.
Motorists should allow additional travel time and watch for posted detours when traveling through the construction area.
Modernizing Greeley’s Downtown Infrastructure
The project addresses aging water, sewer, and stormwater infrastructure beneath downtown streets. Beyond replacing underground utilities, planned improvements include roadway reconstruction, sidewalk upgrades, and streetscape enhancements.
Construction began during summer 2026 and is proceeding in phases to accommodate the extensive underground work.
Although the sewer replacement is nearing its halfway point, water infrastructure improvements remain in earlier stages, meaning construction activity and changing traffic patterns will continue.
Residents and businesses can follow construction progress, review project information, and find updates on the city’s official project website, Speak Up Greeley.
