Larimer County: Illegal dumping poses public health concern

Larimer County crews have been cleaning up the last of the debris piles from county roadways since the right-of-way debris program ended on May 10.

Unfortunately, some flood impacted areas have gone from “debris pick up site” to “illegal dump site” for trash and household items. This is a great public health concern now that the weather has warmed causing food decay which is a public health and safety problem, attracting bears and other wildlife to these illegal dump sites.

Illegal dumping is a crime and Larimer County has had policies in place since 1996 to prevent illegal dumping. All trash and debris should now be transported to the Larimer County Landfill for disposal.

For information on landfill disposal rates and to calculate your cost please visit the Larimer County web site: http://larimer.org/solidwaste/disposal.htm.

“No Dumping” signs have been posted. If illegal dumping continues, Larimer County will consider enforcement procedures and penalties for offenders. The county’s debris program was underway for nine months, from September to May. For specific questions or concerns please contact Lori Hodges, Director of Emergency management and recovery at 970-498-7147.
