Larimer County Sheriff’s Office accepting applications for Fall Citizens Academy

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for the Fall Citizens Academy.

The academy is designed to give citizens an overview of the operations of the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office. Classes will cover patrol operations, investigations, crime lab, emergency management and emergency services, SWAT and other special units and volunteer operations. These classes are presented by deputies and commanders responsible for each area.

The academy starts September 15 and runs through December 8 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday nights for 12 classes and one Saturday field day. There will be no class the week of Thanksgiving.

The academy also includes a tour of the Larimer County Jail and emergency communications center, K-9 demonstration and ride along with a deputy. One of the highlights is the field day where participants take part in live scenarios. The scenarios include responding to calls involving live shootings with simulated ammunition, making simulated traffic stops, experiencing a firearms simulator and processing a mock crime scene.

The academy is limited to 35 students and fills up fast. Visit http://larimersheriff.org/site-page/citizens-academy for more information and to register. The fee for the academy is $30, which covers the cost of a student T-shirt, materials and lunch served on the field day.
