Possibility of a new parking lot downtown is discussed at the Town Board Meeting

The vacant lot at 3736 Cleveland Avenue used to be available as a defacto parking lot, until boulders were placed so cars could no longer drive into it. At the first Town Board meeting of October, the idea of creating a formal parking lot on the lot was discussed.

The lot’s owner, listed by Larimer County as Wellington Lake, LLC with the registered agent Susan Braun Lake, is comfortable with a two year lease for the parking lot and would consider renewal after that. Community members, along with several Trustees, said that they would like a longer lease — aiming for a four or five year lease.

The board discussed paving the lot to provide about 18 free parking spaces for those visiting the downtown area. Mayor Jack Brinkhoff estimated that the recycled asphalt they would use would cost around $5,000.

“Can we spend $5,000 to beautify main street instead of using it for 18 parking spaces,” Trustee Matt Michel said.

Peter Pronko, owner of Proper Time in Wellington, spoke to the board and felt that the parking lot was an investment in downtown infrastructure and thinks it is a very good first step.

“Before boulders were placed, that lot was filled every day by workers and shoppers in town,” Pronko said.

After the discussion, Brinkhoff said that the town wants a five year lease. The board agreed, and did not make a motion but will discuss the parking lot again if the lot’s owners agree to the new terms.
