Beer me: Wellington's first brewery expected to open mid-December

Brandon and Tara Neckel have been patient but their wait will end by mid-December, when the plumbing work is complete and Old Colorado Brewing opens in the old grain elevator, 8121 First St. in Wellington. Originally scheduled to open last spring, plumbing improvements to the old building were needed before a permit could be issued.

“We’re planning a grand opening for the spring,” Tara said. Chances are, Wellington’s first brewery will be busy long before then. A tasting room and the opportunity to watch beer being brewed on-site is likely to attract locals and those from farther away to get a taste of Old Town Brown or Aspen Ale, brewed from recipes Brandon inherited from his grandfather, owner of Fort Collins’ first craft brewery. Once located in the Northern Hotel, Old Colorado Brewing Co. closed in 1993, then re-opened for a decade with Mexican restaurant, Casa de Colorado, closing again in 2002.

Old Colorado Brewing in Wellington will be open from 2-9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 2-10 p.m., Friday and Saturday and 2-9 p.m. on Sunday. The brewery will be closed on Mondays.

Patrons can buy anything from a taster to a keg of beer. The brewery will have growlers available for people to take beer home or they can bring their own containers. In the future bottled beer will be available. Food trucks on the premises will make it possible to enjoy a meal along with any one of five different beers.
