High water in the Poudre leads to tragic deaths

A 14-year-old boy and his 38-year-old uncle lost their lives in the rushing waters of the Poudre River on Memorial Day. The boy fell into the river while fishing near Ouzel Campground and his uncle jumped in to rescue him. The two were Greeley residents. Their names have not been released.

Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Emergency Services, Larimer County Search and Rescue and Larimer County Dive and Rescue Team responded to a call around noon and began a search. People along the river pulled the unconscious uncle out of the water a couple of miles downstream and performed CPR without success. He died later in a local hospital.

The boy’s body was found by a rafter/kayaker eight miles downstream three hours after the search began. Larimer County Coroner’s Office conducted autopsies to determine the cause of death.
